If you’re old enough to remember the early days of the Internet, would you have envisioned it enabling the Smartphone? The blockchain technology underlying cryptocurrency holds similar potential for unleashing a tough-to-predict wave of innovation, perhaps forever altering the way we think about value, trade, and money.
Not unlike the Internet of the 1990s, cryptocurrency is just now “finding its way,” argues Jerry Brito, the executive director of the Coin Center, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank and advocacy group.
Brito sees himself as a civil libertarian, a guardian of cryptocurrency’s “rights” to evolve in a fair, responsible, and transparent way. In his view, no one “owns” the Internet and no single entity or organization should “own” cryptocurrency.
